Bare Naked Ladies - What A Good Boy
When I was born, they looked at me and said
what a good boy, what a smart boy, what a strong boy.
And when you were born, they looked at you and said,
what a good girl, what a smart girl, what a pretty girl.
We've got these chains that hang around our necks,
people want to strangle us with them before we take our first breath.
Afraid of change, afraid of staying the same,
when temptation calls, we just look away.
I have listened to this song for years and today it made me think about being born and labeled as one gender or the other.
I *love* Barenaked Ladies. Hey, actually, that's true in many ways... but I digress. :D
ReplyDeleteJokes aside, yes, this is a wonderful song. They get pegged as a novelty band because of "One Week," but many of their best songs, like this one, are quite serious. "Brian Wilson" is about depression, for instance, as is "Pinch Me." And Jim Creegan, their keyboard player, wrote "Peterborough and the Kawarthas" about the pain of leaving his family to go on tour. Good group...

I agree on your several points. They are much more than a novelty group. I hope they will continue to work together even with their fairly recent changes.
